How Pornography and Addiction Stunt Brain Development

May 01, 20244 min read

Although the statistic is hard to specify exactly, we know the average age that men and women are exposed to pornography is around 13 years old, and for many of those in our program, it started as early as 7 years old.

During these formative years of childhood, young minds are incredibly receptive to influence and adaptable to various stimuli.

When a child engages with pornography, it's not merely a passive experience... it triggers both cognitive and physical alterations in the brain.

This dual effect shows how exposure to pornography can profoundly influence a child's developmental trajectory, shaping their social and emotional abilities in the long run.

FACT 👉 People battling addiction will act based on their emotional maturity rather than their physical age.

Ignoring both their own feelings and those of others, addicts become emotionally disconnected and "immature" for what is expected of their physical age.

What's The Difference Between Physical Age and Emotional Age?

Physical age is easily measured through milestones like losing baby teeth and when bones stop growing.

In contrast, emotional age depends on life experiences and how people respond to them, its the mental maturity a person has.

Drugs, alcohol, and porn abuse can halt emotional growth, leading to immature behavior. Many turn to substances to avoid facing problems, hindering their emotional development.

Why Does Avoiding Life's Problems Mess With Our Emotional Maturity?

It's because we GROW mentally in the tough times. Avoiding problems robs us of the opportunities to develop resilience and character.

We GROW mentally when we accept boundaries, we GROW when we make a mistake and come clean about it, we GROW when we decide to confront our fears...

It's that simple.

The brain is a muscle that needs to be exercised and tested in order to continue developing.

Five Ways Pornography Creates Immaturity In Adults

#1) Stunted Emotional Maturity

When exposed at a young age, porn distorts the child’s understanding of relationships, intimacy & sexuality. High stress often causes emotional maturity to default to age of exposure which is why you hear things like, "I feel like I'm talking to a 10 year old."

#2) Impaired Social Skills

Porn becomes a coping mechanism for loneliness early on and often leads to isolation and seclusion.

Social skills are just that, SKILLS. And just like any skill, it needs to be practiced. For a child who's been exposed to pornography as they grow up, they begin to lose the desire for relationships because of the distortion they're experiencing, and they miss out on the essential skills needed to build and keep relationships.

These factors may contribute to a lack of desire for certain social environments.

#3) Responsibility Avoidance

Porn provides an escape from reality which conditions the brain to avoid stress and pressure to seek escape. This creates an avoidance mentality of not taking on or following through with responsibilities.

#4) Hindered Coping Skills

Porn becomes a replacement for most coping mechanisms that help stress rather than amplify it by adding shame. It’s common to experience difficulty handling life's stressors without feeling overwhelmed and wanting to withdraw.

#5) Hindered Success

Porn conditions the brain to seek instant gratification. This creates a behavior pattern of seeking gratifying activity instead of effective productivity.

Success doesn't happen overnight, there's no "fast-fix." Continuing to follow instant gratification is also robbing you of the time and energy you could spend building something impactful and beautiful in this life.

This impacts performance as a provider for the family.
